What is an Apsara?


An Apsara is an elegant, high class female being. A dancer, who, represent the goddess and dances in harmony to serve the gods and the kings. Her beauty is a charm that captures the hearts of others through movement of her elegant seductive body figure while dancing. She has long, beautiful, silky hair. Decorated with flowers such as, Champa, Champei, Malis, Jasmine and Lotus, all of which leaves a sweet aromatic fragrant in the air. Her body is covered with silk cloth and luxurious jewelries from gold, silver, bronze to precious stones.

Apsara in Cambodia existed since the Kingdom of the Khmer Empire period (8th–13th century A.D., the most powerful empire that ruled most of South East Asia). Many art form figure of Apsaras were carved in the stone walls of the ancient palace temples which still existed til today. Although, they may look quite alike there are many varieties of Apsaras.
